Periodontal Disease
At
some point, most people will suffer from periodontal disease...now there
is a Non-Surgical Treatment for Periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. It
is the leading cause of tooth loss and has now been linked with a higher
incidence of heart disease. You may have it and not realize that the
seemingly insignificant bleeding you
incur is the start of gingivitis. It does not hurt. It is easy to
ignore.
Gingivitis--(infection
of the gums) is the earliest stage and is noted by redness, bleeding,
and swelling. The infection progresses to Early Periodontitis. You may
notice persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. Moderate to
Advanced Periodontitis may be noticed with pus between the teeth and
gums or when permanent teeth are loose or separating, changing the way
your teeth fit together.
A thorough periodontal
examination along with radiographs will reveal the severity of the
disease. A special instrument called a perio probe is used to gently
measure the space between each tooth and gum. A higher measurement
signifies greater bone loss and a more advanced case of periodontal
disease. Thus, it is imperative to receive dental examinations
routinely and to treat this disease at its earliest stage.
Bacteria are the
primary cause of the infection, although there are other factors that
raise the risk and speed at which the disease develops. Customized
treatment to your particular stage of the disease is recommended which
will include the removal of harmful amounts of bacteria through deep
cleanings. Ultrasonic instruments and medicaments flush out debris and
promote healing. New site-specific drug therapies will aid in healing.
A combination of preventive home care and regular maintenance at your
dental office will keep periodontal disease form destroying your smile.
