Family & Preventive Dentistry in Newtown, Bucks County, PA
Our families mean the world to us and being present for life’s moments brings purpose and joy. The problem is that many do not connect overall health to their smiles and in our busy day to day, some put off dental concerns until they can no longer stand the distraction. By this time, bacteria have been given the opportunity to run rampant, creating decay and damage throughout the mouth, as well as the body.
Our teeth, gums, and airway play an important role in our lives and we need to make sure we protect them. We believe there are great preventive tips to share with people of all ages that can make profound positive changes for a healthier future. Click the links below to learn more about each service.
Children’s Dentistry
A child begins to “cut” teeth around 6 months and will continue to teethe until the primary set of teeth is developed by around the second birthday. Each person is unique. While we suggest a first dental visit when they have their full set of primary teeth, we can be a guide beforehand to offer homecare guidance. Children’s dentistry has a primary goal of setting up good preventive habits that will benefit the individual throughout life.
Guided Growth & Airway Development
A good night’s sleep is important for everyone and especially children in their growing years. Having an unobstructed airway is important. Clues that your child may be having disrupted sleep is snoring, sleeping in unusual positions, grinding their teeth, wetting the bed, having night terrors. While they are awake they may exhibit behavioral signs of irritability, moodiness, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, fidgeting and hyperactivity. This is why many children are misdiagnosed with ADHD when it could be related to sleep disordered breathing.
Dental Sealants
Protection from tooth decay is important and that’s where dental sealants come into play. The back teeth, called molars, often develop with deeper grooves than a toothbrush bristle can clean out. The problem is that food gets stuck in these deep grooves and will develop into decay. It doesn’t take long for decay in a primary tooth to cause “ouches”. When a sealant is placed, the deep groove is professionally cleaned out and prepared. Sealant material is bonded into the deep groove, essentially sealing it up from getting food stuck. In this manner, it prevents decay from forming. Sealants get monitored to ensure they continue to provide coverage.
Sports Mouthguards
Our teeth play an important role in our lives. From speaking, eating, to smiling, we need to make sure that we keep them protected. When you play a contact sport, wearing a mouthguard can prevent your tooth from being bumped, chipped, broken, or lost. Learn more about the types of guards available….
Preventive Healthcare
We practice Complete Health Dentistry where our focus is wider than the smile, where we integrate with other healthcare specialties to improve the overall wellness of our patient. Here are some reasons why visiting your family dentist is important at all ages.
Cavities
Cavities are the number one cause of tooth loss, so it is important to know how to identify, prevent, and treat them. Also referred to as “tooth decay”, cavities are the most common dental problem. Fortunately, cavities can be discovered in early stages and treated simply. Cavities can stem from improper homecare, a lack of brushing and flossing, a diet that consumes a lot of sugar, smoking, a lack of fluoride, and the use of drugs which decrease saliva production.
Cavities are common and should be taken care of in the early stages. It is in your control to prevent small problems from becoming bigger problems. Don’t let them be an untimely source of distraction and discomfort.
