What is Malocclusion?

by | Apr 25, 2022 | Blog

Malocclusion is defined as imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaws are closed; in plain terms “crooked teeth”.

Why is this a problem?

Malocclusion creates abnormal stress on teeth and jaws which in turn leads to chipping and premature wear. Premature wear can create stress on the jaw joint and create headaches. The teeth are crashing versus mashing, colliding versus gliding. Crooked, crowded teeth also create a setup for periodontal disease…. allowing for nooks and crannies where food and bacteria can harbor.

Clear Aligner Therapy uses a series of clear, plastic aligners that are worn to gently guide teeth to new locations. Each set of your aligners is calibrated to achieve a certain movement and by the end of your treatment, all your teeth will be in their new desired locations.

The aligners are removable and comfortable to wear. They allow for easier brushing and flossing. Because aligners don’t have brackets or wires that can loosen, they may require fewer repairs and fewer emergency visits, and food won’t get stuck like with metal brackets.
