Cleanings & Exams in Newtown, PA

Routine visits done well. The right schedule, gentle hygienists, and a real plan for your long-term health.

More Than a Polish

A Dental Health Visit at our office is more than a quick polish.

We will update any changes in your health history, perform a head, neck, and oral cancer screening, plus take an intraoral tour (and may capture progress on photos). We’ll also complete a full periodontal chart to show us any trouble spots so that a thorough cleaning, complete with a polish, floss, and fluoride can follow. When you are due for digital films and doctor exams, they will be scheduled. Our hygienists are excellent – We have patients come in for routine maintenance who haven't had a cavity for 5, 10, or 15 years. That's where we want you, too.

Periodontal Charting Is a Roadmap

The periodontal chart is like a roadmap. It shows the hygienist exactly where the problem areas are. Patients sit with us, see the chart, and we walk through the numbers. As we go around your mouth, you'll hear different numbers. Usually, ones, twos, and threes are okay. When we start hearing higher numbers — or when we call out a bleeding point — you'll know what's going on. A good goal is to stay below 10 bleeding points. Even better is none.

How Often to Schedule Dental Cleanings

Dental Health Visits are best done every six months at a minimum. Six months is the average time span between two checkups, but depending on your dental health, Dr. Bob may increase or decrease that. If your teeth and gums are in very healthy condition and your home care shows there is no significant plaque buildup, the doctor may agree to one annual checkup. High-risk patients — those with gum disease, heavy plaque buildup, low immunity, smokers, or pregnant women — may need to increase to three or four visits a year.

Cancer Screening Built In

Every Periodic Exam includes a complete head, neck, and Oral Cancer Screening. Most patients don't realize this is happening — it's quick and non-invasive — but it's one of the most important things we do. Catching oral cancers early dramatically improves outcomes. We screen at every visit, every patient, every time.

Customized Home Care Coaching

As part of every cleaning, we customize your home care guidance. Some patients need an electric toothbrush, water pick, and rubber tips. Some don't need much beyond what they're already doing. We find out what's going to work for you and customize it. There are great products available to help you through your journey — Perio Protect and IO Rinse, for example — and there's always something new coming out on the market, so we try to stay up on different things and match the right ones to your needs.

What's included in a Dental Cleaning and Exam?

For a healthy hygiene cleaning, your visit includes a health history review, a head, neck, and Oral Cancer Screening, a photo update to track progress, full Periodontal Charting, a thorough cleaning with polish, floss, and fluoride, plus an exam with Dr. Bob and digital films as needed. With all the individualized attention we offer, appointments are at least 60 minutes — sometimes longer if needed. We block enough time so we don't rush.

How much does a Dental Cleaning cost in Newtown, PA?

Cost depends on whether you're new to us, whether you need X-rays, and what type of cleaning is appropriate. We are transparent with our fees before any treatment. Most PPO insurance plans cover preventive cleanings — approximately 98% of the time, your benefit can be applied. We file claims as a courtesy.

Does a cleaning hurt?

Most cleanings are not painful. Pressure and the noise of the ultrasonic scaler are the main sensations. If you have inflammation or sensitivity, we can use a comfort agent. Our hygienists are exceptional at gentle technique. If you've had bad cleaning experiences before, tell us — we'll adjust to make it comfortable.

How long does a cleaning take?

Cleanings are based on individual needs which are established by having the Comprehensive New Patient Exam. Generally speaking, a Dental Health Visit for a healthy adult takes about 60 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What if I haven't been in a long time?

Welcome back. Many of our most loyal patients started exactly where you are. The more regularly you come, the easier and less expensive it stays. We'll do a Comprehensive Exam to set a new baseline, then plan a path forward together. No judgment.
  • What kind of toothbrush should I use?

Most patients benefit from an electric toothbrush — they remove plaque more effectively than manual brushing for most people. We recommend a soft bristle, regardless of brand. We can show you proper brushing technique at your visit so you're getting the most out of whatever brush you use.
  • Do I really need X-rays at every visit?

Not at every visit. Most patients need bitewing X-rays once a year to catch decay between teeth, plus a panoramic X-ray every 3-5 years for the bigger picture. If you've had recent films from another office, send them — we'll obtain them so we can minimize duplication.
  • What if I have dental anxiety?

Please let us know before we start. Speaking together, we can find a solution to put you at ease. We are great at being gentle, letting you know what to expect and are always happy to go slower, giving breaks whenever you need them. Many patients with significant dental anxiety end up looking forward to their visits with us. We don't rush, and we don't lecture.
