The mouth is the gateway to the body. Healthier mouths lead to healthier lives.

The Mouth Is the Gateway to the Body

The mouth is the gateway to the body. Plain and simple, many chronic conditions and illnesses first show symptoms in the mouth. The oral-systemic link focuses on detecting, preventing, and treating conditions and illnesses including heart disease, sleep disorders, diabetes, periodontal disease, and more.

A Paradigm Shift

The oral-systemic link offers an opportunity for a paradigm shift in healthcare. Instead of waiting for the eventual emergency to happen, predictive and proactive strategies are available. We have a choice and a chance for more vibrant living. Shifting the paradigm of healthcare to a balanced approach using prevention and proactive strategies permits an opportunity to bring balance back to our healthcare system as well as ourselves.

Inflammation Is a Ticking Timer

We coach on small and daily healthy-lifestyle changes. We recommend individualized care on a maintenance plan that supports what science has taught us. Destruction can happen silently and over time leads to inflammation. Inflammation is known as a ticking timer that sets diseases in motion. As your dental provider, we aim to keep you healthier.

Why Oral-Systemic Health Matters in Real Life

The body is an ecosystem. When it is stable and within normal limits, your body is fine. But when things get out of whack, the bad bacteria can find their way into other organ systems. Surgeons have removed tumors and found oral bacteria. Is there a periodontal connection? Yes, often there is. And that's why we keep saying it: bleeding gums aren't just a gum problem. They're a body problem. Learn more about how we treat the source on our Non-Surgical Periodontal Care page.

What is Oral-Systemic Dentistry?

Oral-Systemic Dentistry recognizes that what happens in your mouth doesn't stay in your mouth. Bad oral bacteria can travel through your bloodstream and contribute to heart disease, stroke, AFib, diabetes complications, dementia, low birth weight babies, and more. Practicing Oral-Systemic Dentistry means looking at your whole health story, not just the tooth in front of us.

Is Oral-Systemic Care covered by insurance?

Standard exams and cleanings are covered by most PPO plans the same way they would be at any practice. Specialized oral-systemic services — like advanced periodontal protocols or airway evaluations — are billed individually and may or may not be covered. We are transparent with fees before any treatment, and financing through Alphaeon and CareCredit is available.

Will an Oral-Systemic Exam hurt or feel different?

Not at all. From your perspective, an oral-systemic exam looks and feels the same as any Comprehensive Exam. We may take blood pressure, ask additional health and sleep questions, and look at things like your airway, posture, and tongue position. It is all non-invasive. Most patients are surprised by how much we cover and how much it explains.

How is this different from what other dentists do?

Most dental practices focus on the tooth in front of them. We start with the whole picture and work backward. Dr. Bob has spent decades studying the oral-systemic connection through advanced training, including ReCODE certification through Dr. Dale Bredesen and Vivos Airway Training. The result is a practice that asks more questions, runs more screenings, and connects more dots than a typical drill-and-fill office.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What conditions are linked to oral health?

Periodontal Disease has been associated with Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease (including heart attacks and AFib), Pulmonary Disease, Dementia and Alzheimer's, low birth weight babies, and a surprising number of other systemic conditions. Specific connections link Gum Disease with Heart Disease, Oral Bacteria with Dementia, and Periodontal Inflammation with Stroke risk. The research keeps growing, and so does the case for taking your gum and oral health seriously.
  • Do you coordinate with my doctor?

When it benefits your care, yes. We work alongside primary care physicians, sleep specialists, ENTs, chiropractors, and the certified ReCODE physicians on Dr. Bob's team for cognitive health cases. Dental care is most powerful when it's part of a bigger picture.
  • Where should I start if I'm new to Oral-Systemic Dentistry?

Start with a Comprehensive Exam. That's where we build your baseline, learn your health story, and identify what's most impactful for you specifically. From there, we'll build a plan.
  • Do I need to change my home care routine?

Maybe — and we'll show you exactly what to change and how. We don't believe in one-size-fits-all home care. Some patients need an electric toothbrush, water pick, and rubber tips. Some don't need much beyond what they're already doing. There's always something new coming out on the market, and we try to stay up on different things — we'll find out what's going to work for you and customize it.
